Choosing the Right Towing Vehicle
Before towing, make sure your towing vehicle is properly matched to the combined weight of your boat, trailer, fuel, equipment, and gear. Towing capacity is the maximum amount of weight a vehicle is designed to tow safely. Because capacity varies considerably among vehicles, configurations, engines, drivetrains, and equipment packages, always consult your vehicle owner’s manual and manufacturer specifications.
Pickup trucks are popular towing vehicles because many offer substantial towing capacities, heavy-duty suspensions, and towing packages. Full-size and some midsize SUVs can also be well suited to boat towing. Crossovers may work for personal watercraft and lighter boats, but their lower towing capacities can make them unsuitable for heavier combinations.
A factory towing package can provide useful equipment, such as an appropriately rated hitch, upgraded cooling, electrical connections, and trailer brake controls. A transmission cooler can also be beneficial because towing places additional demands on the transmission and generates extra heat. Never assume that a vehicle is suitable simply because it can physically pull the trailer. Its rated towing capacity is what matters.
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and Weight Limits
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) represents the maximum allowable weight of a vehicle or trailer when fully loaded. A trailer’s capacity plate or certification label typically provides important information about its GVWR, axle ratings, and other specifications. Check the capacity plate before loading your boat trailer, and account for the weight of the boat, fuel, batteries, equipment, and gear.
The commonly used “80% rule” recommends keeping towing loads at or below approximately 80% of the applicable maximum rating rather than routinely operating at the absolute limit. Maintaining a safety margin can provide additional capacity for passengers, cargo, fuel, and changing driving conditions. However, this rule of thumb does not replace the limits established by vehicle, hitch, tire, or trailer manufacturers.
Gross Combined Vehicle Weight (GCVW) is another important consideration as it includes the combined weight of the towing vehicle and trailer. Follow all applicable manufacturer ratings and never exceed the lowest-rated component in the towing system.
Boat Trailer Types
Choosing the right boat trailer can make launching, retrieving, transporting, and storing your watercraft easier. Three common designs are bunk, roller, and float-on trailers. The right choice depends on factors such as your boat’s hull, size, weight, and typical launch conditions. The ramps you regularly use should also influence your decision.
Bunk Trailers
Bunk trailers support the boat’s hull on long, padded bunks. Their relatively simple design provides broad hull support and can help protect the keel when the trailer is properly fitted to the boat. Bunk trailers are particularly common for smaller boats, including many boats under around 19 feet.
Roller Trailers
Roller trailers use multiple rollers to support the hull and allow the boat to move on and off the trailer. Because the boat can roll rather than needing to float completely off the supports, these trailers can be useful at shallow-water or narrow ramps where backing deeply into the water is difficult.
Float-On Trailers
A float-on trailer is designed so that the trailer is backed sufficiently into the water for the boat to float over its supports. The boat is then positioned and secured before the trailer is pulled from the water. Float-on trailers can be particularly useful for larger boats and at ramps that provide adequate depth.
Preparing Your Boat Trailer
A pre-trip inspection is one of the simplest ways to prevent towing problems. Start with the tires. Check the towing vehicle and trailer tire pressures while the tires are cold and inflate them according to the applicable manufacturer specifications. Inspect trailer tires for cracks, bulges, uneven wear, damage, and adequate tread.
Next, inspect the wheel bearings for signs of excessive play, heat, leakage, or inadequate lubrication. Bearings should be greased according to the trailer or component manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Test the brake lights, turn signals, running lights, and reflectors. Replace damaged lights, lenses, or reflectors before traveling.
Carry a properly inflated trailer spare tire. A basic towing tool kit should also include appropriately sized lug tools, a jack suitable for the loaded trailer, wheel chocks, basic hand tools, a tire-pressure gauge, spare fuses, and other components appropriate for your trailer. Finish with a complete walk-around inspection before departure.
Parking Brake and Trailer Brakes
A towing vehicle’s parking brake is designed to help hold the vehicle when parked. It is not a substitute for properly functioning service brakes or trailer brakes. Where trailer brakes are installed or legally required, test their operation before beginning your trip. Requirements vary by state and trailer weight, so boat owners should understand the regulations that apply to the states where they tow. If your trailer uses a brake controller, verify its settings and operation before entering traffic.
How to Tow a Boat Safely
Correctly connecting the boat trailer to your towing vehicle is essential. Start by confirming that the hitch ball matches the required coupler size. The ball, ball mount, hitch receiver, and other towing components must also have adequate weight ratings for the trailer. Lower the coupler completely onto the ball, close the latch, and secure it with the appropriate pin or lock.
Next, cross the safety chains beneath the coupler before attaching them to the towing vehicle. Crossing the chains creates a cradle that can help support the trailer tongue if the coupler becomes disconnected. Connect the trailer’s wiring harness to the vehicle, and test the brake lights, turn signals, and running lights. Check the electrical cable and brake-away system, if equipped, to ensure they are correctly connected without dragging on the road. Conduct one final walk-around before leaving.
Loading, Balancing, and Securing to Tow a Boat
Weight distribution affects trailer stability. As a general loading principle, approximately 60% of the load should be positioned in the front half of the trailer. Gear inside the boat should also be distributed evenly, and loose items should be removed or securely stowed.
Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer applies to the hitch. For many conventional boat trailers, a tongue weight of about 7% to 12% of the total loaded trailer weight may be appropriate, but you should follow the recommendations for your particular trailer, hitch, and towing vehicle. Too little tongue weight can contribute to dangerous trailer sway. Too much can overload the towing vehicle’s rear axle, suspension, tires, or hitch.
Secure the bow using the winch strap and appropriate bow safety connection. Use properly rated stern or transom straps to prevent the rear of the boat from bouncing or shifting. If recommended for your engine and trailer setup, use an appropriate transom saver or motor support device during transportation.
Driving Techniques for Towing a Boat
The best way to tow a boat trailer is to drive smoothly, conservatively, and with additional space around your vehicle. Reduce your speed and follow posted towing restrictions and applicable state laws. High speeds can increase instability, stopping distance, tire heat, and the consequences of trailer sway. Avoid treating 60 mph to 70 mph as automatically safe simply because the road’s general speed limit allows it.
Increase your following distance significantly because a vehicle towing a loaded boat trailer requires more room to stop. Take turns with a wider arc because the trailer’s wheels track inside the towing vehicle’s path. Make gradual lane changes, use your signals early, and avoid abrupt steering.
If trailer sway occurs, remain controlled, reduce the forces contributing to the sway, and follow your tow vehicle, trailer, and brake-controller manufacturers’ recommendations. Avoid sudden steering or braking maneuvers that can make instability worse.
Backing Up and Launching at the Ramp
Practice backing your boat trailer in an empty parking lot before arriving at a busy launch ramp. Use a spotter whenever possible and agree on simple hand signals before backing. Make sure the driver can always see the spotter. If the spotter disappears from view, stop.
Reverse slowly and make small steering corrections. One useful technique is to place a hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. Moving that hand left generally moves the trailer left, while moving it right moves the trailer right.
At the ramp, back into the water only as far as necessary for your trailer and boat. Keep the towing vehicle’s tires out of the water whenever practical, particularly where the ramp is slippery or traction is limited. Before launching, remember to disconnect tie-downs that must be removed, install the drain plug, prepare dock lines, and complete other launch preparations away from the active ramp whenever possible.
Long-Distance Boat Towing
Long-distance towing requires additional preparation. Plan your route before departure, paying attention to low bridges, height restrictions, narrow roads, construction zones, steep grades, and other conditions that could create problems for your combination. Schedule rest stops during long trips. During each stop, walk around the trailer and inspect the tires, straps, hitch, safety chains, lights, and other components.
Watch for unusual tire wear, loose equipment, or excessive heat around hubs and bearings. Before a long trip, confirm that your spare tire is properly inflated and in serviceable condition. Review your tool kit, too, and make sure your jack and lug tools actually fit the trailer.
Maintenance for Boat Trailers
Regular maintenance can extend the service life of your boat trailer and help identify problems before they lead to breakdowns. Inspect the frame, fasteners, axles, suspension components, brakes, wiring, and other parts regularly. Since boat trailers are repeatedly exposed to water, corrosion inspections are particularly important, especially after saltwater use.
Aluminum trailers offer a notable advantage because aluminum provides strong natural corrosion resistance while typically reducing trailer weight compared with similar steel designs. Galvanized steel also offers corrosion protection and remains a popular choice for marine trailers.
Regardless of construction material, rinse components as appropriate after saltwater exposure, inspect for deterioration, and maintain wheel bearings according to manufacturer recommendations. Grease or service bearings on the specified schedule, and address damaged seals or signs of water intrusion promptly.
